{"id":444,"date":"2003-07-16T09:12:22","date_gmt":"2003-07-16T09:12:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jasonbassford.com\/?p=444"},"modified":"2021-11-12T20:11:58","modified_gmt":"2021-11-13T01:11:58","slug":"netscapes_dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasonbassford.com\/index.php\/2003\/07\/16\/netscapes_dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Netscape&#8217;s dead, long live the Mozilla Foundation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AOL has given up the ghost on Netscape, pulling out all resources and letting staff go.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, mozilla.org has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozillazine.org\/articles\/article3420.html\">announced<\/a> that they&#8217;ve created a new non-profit organization called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozillafoundation.org\/\">Mozilla Foundation<\/a>.  (Links to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/\">old site<\/a> are aliased to the new site\/name, so if you click on the previous two links you&#8217;ll get the same thing, except for the title.)<\/p>\n<p>Apparently AOL gave The Mozilla Foundation $2M in &#8220;seed&#8221; money as a kind of severance package.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think that, while bad news for employees who got the boot (and with whom I can sympathize after having been out of work for a year and a half myself due to an unexpected layoff), it&#8217;s great news for the Mozilla browser.  Finally, they won&#8217;t be pressured to answer to AOL.  Despite all of their protests, it&#8217;s obvious that due to funding and political pressure, AOL was a big yoke around their necks holding them back.
